BC Randonneurs Member #1, John "Round The World" Hathaway, turned 100 years old on January 13th of this year.
Ride starts at 8:00 am, Saturday, September 27th in front of the Aristicrat Cafe neon sign on the south west corner of West Broadway and Granville. This street corner has much historical significance. Many Vancouver Bicycle Club rides started here, and possibly the earliest BC Randonneur rides may have also started in front of the old Aristicat Cafe that once stood on this corner. Many of these rides were led by John.
A little history: The first four members of the BCR all hailed from the VBC along with many of the other early members. It was from the VBC that our club was formed. Amongst the first 10 members was the clubs first female member, June Gallagher, Member #8. John was famous, or infamous, for his unorthadox riding style, which consisted of riding in a weaving pattern. He could ride a 400 km in 600 km. I don't recommend riding in this manner. There is much about John told on the BCR website so check it out.
I will be there to send off all participating riders at 8 am sharp along with any instructions. Unfortunately I will not be riding due to a competing conflict for my time.
The forcast is for rain, which John would have loved, he was an Englishman after all.
Map and route sheet is on the website.
See you Saturday!
