To celebrate the 159th anniversary of Canada Day, we will do a 159km non-competition, social ride in the scenic Fraser Valley around Derby Reach, Matsqui Village, Yarrow and Birchwood Dairy in Abbotsford.

Please note, the event is for BC Randonneurs members ONLY. Join at https://database.randonneurs.bc.ca/registration/member.

The annual membership fee is $20.

The event participation fee is $20.

So the total fee for newly joined member is $40.

Entries will be capped at 100 and registration closed if that number is approached. Click the "Who's Registered" button on the top of this event page to get an idea of how many spots are still available.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

This year, we have made some significant changes to the route near Matsqui Village and Sumas Mountain before hitting Yarrow, including some light gravel sections on dikes where 28c tires are recommended.

Same as last year, the start will be at Walnut Grove community center parking lot but the finish is moved to a nearby coffee shop.

Caution! Please do not park in the community center parking lot which is reserved for the patrons of the facility. They have automated license plate scanning! 212th Street near James Kennedy Elementary is an option.

*** Please note, not like the usual Canada Day Populaire in the past, this is an introductory ride to randonneuring which is long-distance unsupported endurance cycling. The check points (Controls) at Matsqui Valley and Birchwood Dairy are for verification of riders following the route. Water, Gatorade powder and maybe some snacks will be provided at the check points. Riders are solely responsible for their own food/water supply arrangement. ***

We hope to see you there!

Update #1
1st Pre-Ride report (2026-06-20):

Maurice, Manfred, and I set off from the Walnut Grove Community Center at 9:00 a.m. It was cool, a few clouds, and the route around Allard Crescent and into Glen Valley was quite pleasant.  Then we went up Graham Crescent.  We walked.  Then we did the Olund Trail.  It is a very nice trail, but it has some eroded bits, loose gravel, sharp turns, and sudden steep ups that, in retrospect, are inappropriate for a populaire.  So some changes have been made.  We stopped for lunch at Clayburn Village, 60 km in, and that took almost 4 hours.  Definitely changes to be made!  I went on by myself from there, learning later that Maurice and Manfred had gone back to Langley.

The climb from Clayburn up Straiton Road then down Sumas Mountain Road has been a fixture of the July 1 Populaire since the beginning.  It stays.  But I found the stretch of the TransCanada Trail that parallels North Parallel to be coarser and looser gravel and slower than I remember, so it is out.  The Matsqui Trail, which we'd done earlier, and the Sumas Dyke Trail into Yarrow, are smoother gravel and an easy ride, so we're leaving them in.  It's nice to have long car-free stretches.  After Yarrow it was hot and I had a stiff headwind.  Nothing we can do about that, but the steepest bit of 248 St can be avoided--we have changed the route to 256 St.

The major changes are to climb out of Fort Langley via 240 St and Telegraph Trail.  This is the easiest climb and the traditional route.  We'll go east on 64 Ave and 60 Ave to cross Nathan Creek and get onto Harris Rd.  Harris Rd is not ideal, but it is mostly downhill eastbound.  Just take the lane on downhills.  Hopefully traffic will be light early on a holiday.  We'll stay on North Parallel right to the end.  A few more minor adjustments have been made to make the route 159 km.  Controls are at Mission Bridge Picnic Area, Pioneer Park in Yarrow, and the Birchwood Dairy.  It should be a good day, have fun!

Mike

Update#2
2nd Pre-Ride report (2026-06-27)

Due to unaligned schedule with other fellow volunteers, I set off again from Walnut Grove Community Center at 9:00am all by myself. It was cooler than last week and shower was forecast but it never showed up. Wind blowing from SW was mild in the morning until I turned around in Yarrow, from there the head wind got stronger gradually all the way to 256th where I turned north.

Most of the course is car-free or low traffic, just watch out for cracks and potholes here or there.

At the Sumas Dyke Trail, there’re 2 underpass (Hwy 1 & Keith Wilson Rd). The entry and exit are short but a little steep, just be aware. Towards the end of the Sumas Dyke Trail section, there is a gate between the gravel exit and the pavement. So, walking down the short sloop is recommended if your front tire is not rated for gravel.

On 256th, the intersections at 16th and Fraser Hwy are uncontrolled and the cross traffic is fast. Please be cautious when crossing.

On the course, after the start there’s no food service until you reach Clayburn Village (56km). The Centex gas station at Vye & Columbia (116.7km) is permanently closed and the next service is at 144.5km. That is about 40km from Birchwood.

I’ll see you at the start!

Maurice
