As of August 22 the evacuation alert and order for the Dogtooth fire South of Golden has been removed.
Please note that this ride is subjec to possible cancellation or substitution depending on the wildfire situation. If this is still the case in early September, a different route will be used, possibly the Chase- Kootenay 1000. If a suitable route that avoids evacuation areas cannot be found, the ride will be cancelled.
A new adventure into Alberta. Completely unsupported. Overnights at Cochrane and Cranbrook (340-400-260). Alternatively, you could do Cochrane and Fernie (340-300-360) Not an excessive amount of climbing overall, but the distances between services may present a challenge. Expect wind in Alberta. The route is entirely new, and will not be pre-ridden, so some on-the-fly route finding may be necessary. Open eating establishments are few and far between for most of the second day. There are a couple of cafes in Turner Valley that look like they should be open, and gas stations in every small town. There is a Subway in Diamond Valley, just off route that you can access bu staying on the Cowboy trail as you leave Turner Valley. This would add 2 km to your route. If you do this, just continue South from there on Hwy 22/Cowboy Trail. You do not need to backtrack to Turner Valley to get back on the route.
