Join us to celebrate long-time veteran Randonneur Manfred Kuchenmuller's 85th birthday with an 85 km car-free (as much as possible!) and (nice and easy) gravel ride on the Traboulay/PoCo Trail and Alouette and Pitt River dike trails in Pitt Meadows. It will be fun!
19 July 2026 Update--Pre-Ride Report:
This is a nice route! I have made three main tweaks. I found the traffic on Harris Rd, McNeil Rd, and Neaves Rd to be heavier than I expected, and it may be even heavier on a holiday weekend, so I've rerouted onto more of the Alouette - Pitt River Trail. I've also swapped in the North Alouette River Trail at Km 40. The stretch along the Pitt River East Dyke and the Rennie Dyke trail as you approach the control at Heron Point remains; this is roughest bit of gravel trail on the route. Please use caution here. The heaviest traffic is along Dewdney Trunk Rd and Maple Meadows Way where the route crossed the Lougheed Highway. I can't re-route without making the route too long, but this stretch is only 500 m long and it gets you onto the wonderful Wildwood Trail. Virtually the entire stretch from the Katzie control to the Addington Point control is car-free gravel dyke trail. Enjoy! Please use caution approaching Addington Point as the access trail is narrow single track.
The third tweak I've had to make is to make the return from Addington Point to Cedar Dr an out-and-back, so we will return the way we go in. Cedar Dr is closed for dyke construction. After Km 82, follow the PoCo Trail through Wellington Park and then Coquitlam River Park. The Trail is pretty well signposted with PoCo Trail markers. Part of this is also the TransCanada Trail, but the TCT goes north at one point, so watch for that. I am considering ending the route 800 m earlier at Lions Park. You will be advised at the start if this happens.
Be aware that there is a fair bit of gravel and allow more time than you usually would for a 85 km ride. The gravel is virtually all smooth and level, very little loose stone. A road bike with 28 mm tires should have no problems, though 32 or 35 mm would be better. RwGPS says 63% unpaved, but much of the pavement is paved cycle path or quiet residential roads. Unfortuneately, there are some root snakes on the paved paths, so be careful.
Parking near the start should not be a problem. I recommend parking on Chine Dr on the north side of the Coquitlam River and riding to the start via the McAllister Ave ped bridge.
20 July Update: Start and Finish finalized
We have changed the finish to the Patina Brewery Co. and BBQ at 2332 Marpole Ave in Port Coquitlam. We have also moved the start to the PoCo Trail at Maple St and Marpole Ave, to get the route distance a little closer to 85 km.
